There have been over 300 television remakes of William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, countless allusions in media and music, and its traces have been found throughout everyday conversations for centuries.
Although Shakespeare was an English playwright and writer, his works are so deeply ingrained in our modern culture that it increases our awareness of American culture when we read it. The play, written in similar syntax and style to the King James Bible, touches on many of the essential characteristics of human nature: love, joy, pain, and death. These timeless natural traits have helped maintain its value for centuries past and to come. |
We will be watching parts of the play performed in the Globe Theater (as shown on right) as well as a modern performance (1996 as shown below) by Leonardo DiCaprio and Clair Danes.
